Atop his kennel, Snoopy surveys the skies, scene of his triumph as a World War I flying ace. Modestly he considers his genius. Stoically he accepts that his brilliance in nearly every field of endeavor will forever go unremarked by humankind. He can but uphold his own high standards. (“I refuse to chase a stick that hasn’t been properly sanded and polished”) and his own immutable philosophy (“In the book of life the answers are not in the back”).

Mary Zimmerman’s The Secret in the Wings adapts a group of lesser-known fairy tales to create a theatrical work that sets their dark mystery against her signature wit and humor. The framing story concerns a child and the frightening babysitter with whom her parents leave her. As the babysitter reads from a book, the characters in each of the tales materialize, with each tale breaking off just at its bleakest moment before giving way to the next one.

“Long before haunted houses existed, haunted woods circled the globe. Homer knew it. The Brothers Grimm knew it. In legend, all the great mythic quests of self-discovery begin with the hero entering a dark wood. Some journeys also end there.” ― Robert Dunbar, Dark Forest
“It came from the woods. Most strange things do.” ― Emily Carroll, Through the Woods
The Forest is the setting for the dark tales we will share. It is full of enchantments and wonders and we will journey through its twisting thorns and shadows, entering the home of blood-seekers, bone-crunchers and teeth that snap under full moons. We might find a path or lose our way… anything can happen in the woods…

In Forest Lore, we will use multiple styles of puppetry (including shadow play, modified Bunraku and object manipulation) to tell fantastical stories and meet the many weird, wonderful and frightening creatures lurking in the woods. Puppetry incorporates physicality, voice work, and lots of teamwork. We will be improving our dexterity, specificity and character work, as well as using our imaginations to bring the impossible to life.

    Around the World in Dialects

    Grades: 7-12
    • Class Times

      July 5-July 7

      Wednesday-Friday

      9:00am-3:00pm

    Directed by Gin Hammond

Actors are regularly called upon to use accents and dialects on stage, on camera, and for voice over.  The goal of this Theater Lab is to empower young actors  with tools for fearlessly figuring out any accent or dialect, and maybe learn a little about their own dialects in the process! We will explore dialect work through discussion, listening to samples, and playing games.  These skills can also be applied directly to creating character voices.

Get ready for an acting experience unlike any other. Come flex your Shakespeare muscles, textually and literally, in one of the most difficult acting arenas for performers: the outdoors. Ever wanted to watch Hermia and Helena throw punches? What if Lady Macbeth’s raven monologue was done while she was practicing broadsword drills? We’ll work on Shakespearean monologues, scenes, generative work, and combat, taking them to the trees and truly making the world your stage. Dress appropriately – rain or shine, the show must go on!
